End of the Year...Reflections

As this 2009 year comes to a close...Many of us...drifted slowly away from our goal of losing a pound a week or at least I did...I want you to know, however, I had found it very helpful...banding with others to lose weight...I did very well...at the beginning...

As time went by...my daughter-in-law, Holly...took off...and continued to do very well...Some of you...Gail and Renee...had already lost a tremendous amount BEFORE we even started the BLOG...The "3" of you...truly were "inspiring" to me....

However, my world turned upside down....I found myself becoming unfocused and my personal goal to lose weight got lost in the shuffle of "moving"...After 21 years in Florida...we moved to a frontier unknown...the state of Montana...This was truly a major change...I know it was not an excuse to "eat" whatever I felt like, yet I did....These past months since AUGUST...living in an RV park for 2 months and now, in a ONE room motel for the remaining year...with Garvin and a 16 year old...no HOME to care for...no callings to keep me busy...no GARDEN to tend...I found going to the refrigerator my constant sense of companionship....Reading and working on my computer became my "activities" day in and day out...Fortunately, I did do some Seminary teaching and a few assignments for the Relief Society took my out of "my room"...Other than that, I became more of a recluse and found myself...being drawn into a way of life...that was "new to me"...

After 4 months...gaining all my "weight loss" back...PLUS an additional 15 pounds...I am now weighing more than I ever have in my entire life...It was time for me to take a deep look into my soul...I needed to understand why I was choosing a path leading me more into a destructive mode "physically" and in other ways "mentally"...than a positive one...Though, I learned a GREAT DEAL in "spiritual" truths and insights...I wasn't dealing with the "inner" me...

I am discovering answers...and am setting "goals" to pull myself out...of the "hole" I was digging for myself...I can NOT do this "alone"...I have come to KNOW...that through "Christ" all things are possible...if I but, truly, TURN TO HIM on a DAILY BASIS...Some of you may be surprised by my comment...perhaps...thinking I had this all down in my life...but, for the past 3 years...I was "slipping" from what brought me the greatest JOY...PEACE...and STRENGTH....I was trying to handle Life's situations...with less prayer...less scripture study...less drawing from the only source that will make one "whole"...I KNOW I had to TURN from going "inward" to an "outward" way of living LIFE...SERVING Father FIRST...which in turn...places me living to SERVE others...and "losing myself".....

I have rededicated my life...my "covenants" mean more to me...now...than they ever have...My understanding...has deepened...and my DESIRE...to build Father's kingdom...is my life's focus...

So, what does this have to do with THIS particular BLOG..."weight loss"...? Well, overcoming the "physical" is a step towards...deepening our "spiritual" relationship with our Father...Our body is a "temple" and it does have a "direct" correlation with our "spirit"...

I am resetting my "weight loss" goals...but, with a difference emphasis...on WHY the need to lose my weight...I can do "all things" through Christ...who WILL STRENGTHEN me...

I will weigh in on New Year's Day...to set my "ticker"...(smile)  Happy New Year, everyone...!!!!

  1. Debbie,

I am excited about a new year and new goals. As you all may know I had a tough year losing my Dad and then having some stress within my own family. I was up to my all time life time high weight. But last September I decided to focus and begin to tackle the problem. I've lost 25 pounds since September 1. More recently Gail and Hayley and Cheryl and I joined an on-line diet group competition headed up by an LDS woman I've become acquainted with. It has been so awesome. We will be starting a new group up later in January if you are interested. But here are the details if you'd like to start living the lifestyle now. I cannot believe how it has motivated and focused me! I love having so many things to track and focus on rather than just trying not to eat everything. My favorites have been fruits and veggies (and yes I've found myself eating veggies at 11 at night because I didn't get them all in) and also the sugar once a week. I find having a treat once a week keeps me from binging and also makes me discriminate about how much I really want a particular thing I made it through all the holidays only once deciding to eat sugar twice a week (Christmas and Christmas eve) So anyway here are the details if you want to work on it now. Keep checking the site to see when she starts up the next contest if you're interested. Sandee

    Healthy Holidays Contest

    This competition runs from
    Monday, November 23 - Sunday, January 31
    RULES:
Teams will be randomly drawn from a hat or bowl or something.
Every team that does NOT win the weekly point challenge will owe $5 for every member on that team due once a month. So, if I am on Team C and we win 2 weeks and don't win 2 weeks (even if we're in second place those weeks), I will pay $10 along with every other member of my team.
At the end of the ten weeks, $50 will be taken out of the pooled money for prizes. In addition, whichever team has the most points will divide the rest of the money among their group.
If you join this competition, you are in it for the ten weeks. If something major comes up, please let me know asap and try to find someone to replace you.
Points are due every Monday by noon. Please fill out the points report on this site and submit on time.
If you want to participate, but don't want to pay (which means you won't receive a cut of the prize money) - feel free to sign up below and just let me know you won't be paying. That way I can keep the number of non-paying people on the teams as even as possible. I will say that those who pay in these competitions tend to have good statistics because they work hard to try to avoid paying. ;-)
    POINTS
    2 points/day for getting your 5 fruits/veggies daily
- or 3 points/day if at least 3 of your 5-a-day come from vegetables.
3 points/day for getting 30 minutes of exercise
- or 5 points/day for getting 60 minutes of exercise. These points are only available 6 days/week (taking one day off is GOOD for you!).
2 points/day for tracking what you eat
5 points/day for no sweets. These points are only available 6 days/week leaving you one day to eat a sweet if you'd like. This will be especially important over the holidays. Don't want anybody bingeing!
2 points/day for drinking at least 48 oz. of water daily.
5 points/week for maintaining your weight
+ 10 points/week for each pound you lose - There will be no penalty for gaining weight. You will not be able to count your 5 points for maintaining and you will not be able to count additional pounds lost until you lose what you gained.
5 points/month for each ½" you lose from your waist.
5 points/month for each ½" you lose from your hips.
5 points/day - Special challenge for the week - these challenges will vary.
25 points/week for each team that turns their points in by 3:00 p.m. on MONDAY. If even one person is late - NO POINTS will be awarded for that team.

  2. HI All(:
Mom I love the restarting, refocusing. Even though I did loose this year I also gained, and that includes with these holiday. I know our weight effects us as well. Think about it, when we gain we feel yucky, or atleast I do and get stuck even more and get dragged down(: I know I am feeling a tad bit more stress right now if that is even possible(: as Josh will be home by the 10 of Jan(: Yes I am so excited but nervous too. It has been a very long time(:
Mom I totally echo your whole statement. The last while I have not been doing all I should be and feel alone including in my weight goal efforts. I know better but let food over come me. I will even sit there saying I really dont want to eat this and find I do anyways.
I like hainv our own BLOG and safe place to track a not so pretty topic with those who understand and who are not going to judge but encourage. I will start back here as well...mom do you plan on restarting the tickers or just add a new one for the year along side the other one to see how well we did and to encourage us to stay focused and move forward.
I like the points and goals of ther site Sandee and the others have been using. Maybe we can use them in our own Blog as well, so we arent just focusing on our weightloss but our healthier choices too. Maybe we can think of a different reward system for motivation so we can all take part and not have an added stress of money(:
Even though I didnt get to where I wanted to and have added a few since then I have added a before pic of last Christmas and a now pic for this Christmas on our family BLOG if anyone wants to check it out(: I will be refocusing and getting back on track(:
I wish all of you a wonderful Happy Healthy New Year and look forward to hearing how we are all going to work together to help each other along the way(:
Love always and there for each of you, Holly(:

  3. Just another thought ladies. As we are working towards our physical healthiness what if we added 5 points a day for reading our scriptures. That way we are also focusing on our Spiritual health as well. Just a thought. What do you think?
    Have a super duper night(:
